Justified an upgrade by saying that it’ll help save lives.

Then I discovered that I didn’t have enough ports on my Corsair 850w power supply. Nothing a trip to Best Buy for a EVGA 1000W wouldn’t solve.

Now I’m trucking along at an estimated 2.2 million PPD thanks to the new 2070 Super and the 1080 I already had in there.

Good thing electricity is free.

I have that same 960 EVO in my rig, slick SSD for sure but I really want that 2070.  Did you end up with a Super?

Not me, I’m on solar with batteries for night time. I only see an electric bill in January and February. The rest of the year I send out to the grid.

You can’t see it, as it’s hidden by one of the cards now, but there is also an XPG SX8200 Pro 2gb NVME in there. 

Yes. It’s the 2070 Super. EVGA has a mail in rebate for those cards, so it brings it down a bit. If I had thought to look before buying from BestBuy, EVGA has a bunch of refurbished cards on their site. I pai d $530, they have it for $450 or so. Some really good deals on their site.

Cashing in on fixed off-peak hydro. Im debating between picking up a 2080 or used Titan XPs, which both yield roughly 1.4m PPD, but thats not a top priority for me atm.

I’ve been out of the computer building scene for a while so sorry for the dumb question. If you tie cards together like that, can games effectively use them both. Like does 1+1=2? Or does it equal 1.5?

In short, will it run Crysis?

The way I have it with 2 different cards, they are totally independent. The 1080 isn’t even hooked up to a monitor, it just folds. So zero improvement in games. If I had 2 of the same card, I could tie them together using SLI and from what I read get between 1.5 and 2x the performance. I thought about doing that and passing my 1080 to my son, but then I read that there are very few games that support SLI and decided against it.

No. There was a push for “SLI” (no longer 3Dfx’s scan- line interleave, but still with the same idea of using multiple cards to speed things up ), but it’s never been very efficient, was frequently problematic, often increases lag due to the way the work is split, and has generally been poorly supported, so it’s really quite rare these days. Even then you’d generally have to use matched cards. DirectX 12 introduced an asymmetric  multi-GPU feature, which got a lot of attention ~5 years ago (AMD also had offered a similar feature in the past), but I’ve heard almost nothing about it since then, so it seems likely adopting it was too much of a pain for developers, even with support baked into DirectX.

W ith them both folding, I’m at 77 on the 2070 (fan is at 64%) and 64 on the 1080 (fan at 35%)
